She started saving for retirement in a 401(k) just 10 years before hitting retirement age, and she's now living comfortably.

This one-time question evolved into a series of candid and enlightening conversations that we continue to have to this day. And, after each conversation, I'm left with several spoken and unspoken lessons that I apply to my own financial decision-making as IMy grandma grew up on a farm. When I ask her about her childhood, it seems pretty idyllic; she reminisces on it fondly. While my great-grandparents weren't well-to-do, they did have everything they needed.

She wasn't clear about the cost of the plan to her, if a match was being offered , the possible return on investment, and, in general, what to expect. Finally, I asked my grandma if she felt good about what she saved. "I feel great about what I saved," she told me. I learned several lessons from watching my grandmother's retirement journey.
