Construction industry fails in 'misconceived' flexibility push | nickbonyhady

Builders have been left disappointed after the industrial tribunal knocked back their bid to cut workers' hours and drop minimum shift times to safeguard jobs just as the industry faces more severe restrictions in Victoria.

Without the changes to employees hours, which would have applied only to the businesses not on JobKeeper, the Housing Industry Association of Australia said there could be "extensive layoffs instead of a 'bridge' across this pandemic, and a prolonged slump instead of a V-shaped recovery.

The Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union's construction secretary Dave Noonan branded the employers' bid an "attack on workers" that was "uniquely and cynically audacious".Master Builders Australia, one of the groups that brought the application, is reviewing the decision. "The decision is disappointing," said chief executive Denita Wawn.
