Baseball was my first love, starting way back when I was 5 years old in Carbondale, Colorado. I played on and off for most of my young life, and if I hadn’t sustained a serious injury in college, I might still be playing today. Instead I lead T-Mobile’s B2B ventures — a.k.a. T-Mobile for Business — while rooting for my kids’ little league teams and looking forward to the opening day of Major League Baseball every year.
In business, the successes I’ve had come from discovering my passions and pursuing them on my own, then figuring out how to apply them to my company’s greater goals. Similarly, I’ve learned that my whole team benefits when I build autonomy into our overall strategy. Autonomy empowers people to pursue their own passions, and their individual self-motivation helps move the whole team forward.I walked away from baseball in high school and opted to play basketball instead.
There's a business lesson to be learned here. Understand your situation, be aware of what your team is capable of, play through different scenarios. How will competitors try to gain advantage in the marketplace? How will they respond to your strategy? How will you respond to their response? This kind of situational thinking makes you more agile and better prepared when the time comes to take action.
