The national result was pulled down by Victoria, where payroll jobs fell by 1.2 per cent in the period. There were also falls in Western Australia and the two territories.Queensland was the best-performed state with payroll jobs up by 0.6 per cent in the fortnight while they rose by 0.5 per cent in South Australia and 0.2 per cent in NSW.Since payroll data started being collated in mid-March, jobs are down by 6.7 per cent in Victoria, the worst of any state or territory.
Internal card and merchant data from ANZ also highlighted the impact of Victoria on the economy, with retail spending there 12 per cent lower than a year ago for the week to August 8. It was the state's worst performance since early May. The lockdown across Melbourne has hit key parts of Victoria's economy, with spending on dining and takeaway down 59 per cent year-on-year while fashion spending is 60 per cent lower.
CBA also found while overall spending nationally was up 8 per cent over the same week last year, it was being driven by a 21 per cent jump in online purchases.

No shit Einstein you have the 2nd biggest economy locked down and not spending and it pulls down the national economy go figure. You wait till it's back up and running. My tourist dollars will go straight back into this economy every other state can find for itself.
Another pathetic shock-jock headline from The Age. “Independent. Always” - not any more unfortunately
more inflammatory heading
