While the typical discussions about hiring biases rightly focus on racial, gender and age biases , there’s another deeply insidious bias that ruins hiring effectiveness. And this hiring bias escapes our attention because it’s actually rooted in a really positive attribute of leaders.
Unfortunately, while most managers can restrain themselves from helping a failing candidate on a skills test, a great many managers cannot stop themselves from assisting a candidate that isn’t demonstrating enough coachability or emotional intelligence. And yet, if you’ve lived in the real world for any length of time, you know for a fact that there are plenty of people who neither adapted to, nor overcame, the numerous difficult situations they faced.
Great interview questions, free from this bias, are almost painfully open-ended and focus on a challenging situation. You can see questions that share these characteristics in the online quiz Imagine that you stripped the bias out of your question and instead asked, “Could you tell me about a time you faced a difficult situation?” Then imagine a candidate gave you this answer:
