China's growing wine industry produced more than 800 million litres last year and it has the second-largest vineyard area in the world. But can its wine replace imported Australian wines? Experts don't think so.

While the Chinese wine industry is not as established as Australia's, it's also not one which should be discounted.Last year alone, China produced more than 800 million litres of

Chinese wines, like Australian wines, are considered new world wines — a term used by sommeliers to describe wines which are not grown from traditional regions such as Italy or France. And large wineries, such as Changyu, have plenty of capital behind them and employ "high-quality winemakers",there is "plenty of scope for it to rise" with the quality of its wine continuously improving, Mr Anderson said.Wang Fang owns an award-winning boutique Chinese winery.

Ms Wang has won top international awards and produced one of the first Chinese grape wines to break into the Australian market. "Wines from our region, which consists of large areas of deserts, are really strong and powerful, and the colour is very beautiful as well.

How is this relevant?

Yes repair it and then sell everything to China StandWithAustralia bycottchina China autralia oioioi StandUp

I’ve had locally made wine in China, it was shite

There’s nothing about if there are enough domestic wines! They like wines from western! Domestic is not in good quality and has food safety issue. They will turn to European products

China claims Australia’s “wine dumping” has caused damage to their domestic wine industry. Can anyone venture as to the veracity of that statement?

They will import wines from Napa valley.

It's the Chinese Government's way of raising funds from their wealthy. Put huge tariffs on Supreme Quality produce from Australia and the wealthy Chinese will buy it for the superior quality, prestigious image. The Chinese Government is Broke, busted, bankrupt.

Let’s leave them alone to avoid being like Japan

Wine wine whine...aren’t we forgetting leadership, war crimes and dare I say ROBODEBT! Schumko got you running again ABC!

You idiot.... they source more from... a better country

Their loss. Sell it elsewhere

Haha if its anything like their electronics or cars its bound to be Crap MadeInChina is Rubbish

Will they notice, is the real question

Doesn’t matter shit wine is shit wine!

no, but Australia is not the only land produces wines, and wines are not the only drink that Chinese drinks.

Who cares let them drink crap

Pathetic double standards by China = destroyers of minorities. China is a bully and like most bullies when people stand up to them they whinge and cry and revert to lies and deceit. BoycottChina Be smart enough to trade with other markets - stop depending on china.

ad I bet it's n a s t y

In volume yes, as shown in an A. Kohler graph earlier this week, but it’s garbage. That should be in the ad campaign “drink less garbage”

If China’s wine was that good why do they mostly buy Australian wine which i might add is their preferred wine

They don't have to be big enough to replace Australian wines. They just don't purchase Australian wines. It seems that a sour grape when the media keep shouting. If you want to smear China, expect No Deal.

Hmm if they’re still using human excrement as fertiliser you can rest assured their wine will be crap

I remember when the solar panel market was taking off, before 2010, the Chinese took control of it by their govt subsidising local product. This is how they play the game. If they want a market, they’ll take it, no rules will stop them..

Who cares. Ours taste better. The chinese people are the real victims in all this. They miss out on quality products

If Australian business models rely on China markets, now a very risky venture, for shareholders too.

They have land to make wine?

I believe they own a number of wineries in Australia anyway. I rekon it is purely ‘Australian owned’ wines that will be taxed.

These replies are so cute. Talk to the people and regions who are going to be affected by the boofheaded diplomacy of Morrison right now.

not importing Australian wine doesn't mean they have to produce their own, they also can import from somewhere else like France.

France,Italy,south Africa,Chile,Spain and other countries

All the things that Chinese gov recently put a tariff on are things which aren’t necessities or products which can be obtained from elsewhere. Unfortunately these are all strategic moves by Chinese gov but not so for us. Australian gov is really on the back foot this time.

Wouldn’t trust there water supply. Pollution plus there

Finally, some truth about the motive behind the action. And the lesson for AUS, diversify.

There are many wine producing countries in the world. Australian wines can be easily replaced by others. Nobody will say no to revenue.

I sure hope not! And i hope no one makes up the shortfall.

1. Australia is not the only country produce wine. 2. wine is not necessity.

I can be the biggest supplier of vinegar but not mean you will drink it

No. But more Brazil or americas is...

Irrelevant. Chinese doesn't have a red wine culture. Plus human being can survive without alcohol

It sure is , except the soil and water is contaminated with heavy metals.

Oh yes it just doesn’t have the snob value that Australian wine does.Seeing cashed up Chinese folk paying huge amounts for name brands must make many very pleased.

do Ausralians have big enough balls to kick this blood sucking government out?!

lol, does it matter? french, italian, spanish, canadian, argentine, I can go on with this list

Looks like they just don't care anymore .

So much for trade agreements and level playing fields

In business having one big client, it doesn't take long for that big client to start dictating terms to the supplier.....

Probably tainted with poison though.

Why are our markets all relying on China is the bigger question to be put to the government! Why aren’t we becoming more self sufficient? We have heard our government talk for years about the rise of China’s economy and here we are. We shouldn’t have our eggs all in one 🧺.

Your headline sounds a bit like anybody other than the people living in China should care. abcnews abc730 radionational auspol chinadailyshow ChinaDaily_EU ChinaDailyNews1 ChinaDailyNews1 chinadailyrus ChinaConSydney

This chart from ElysseMorgan the other day. World producers🤔

Who really cares what chinas wine industry does. They can drink own viniger

Australia needs to forget the China market. It’s gone. Find better customers elsewhere.

Xi doesn't care

When they pour wine in 1.5l jars and mix with lemonade to serve, who cares?

It is a silly question. Do you believe that Chinese government cares about it?

What a silly question and why does it matter to us anyway? It’s a waste of time trying analyse all details of this and navel gazing. More productive to put efforts into finding new markets and promote our wines.

Chinese wine. Is that a bit like Russian cuisine? (Sorry Russia 😉)

Do they have a domestic wine industry, certainly wouldn't buy it, we all know the poisons they use that are banned to freeze veg

I recall a story on Landline 10 years ago where they were singing the praises of the Chinese wine industry and the opportunity for Aus to provide training. One producer brought all it's employees to Aus for a training tour. 🤷‍♂️

Chinese wine likely to be adulterated like most chinese products, like baby formula. Thats why Chinese people dont trust their own products. Probably camel piss flavour

Let them drink there own contaminated piss.

Told all of my fam not to buy anything from Scamaon, its all slave sweat shop counterfeit trash from the CCP, all of it.

Only drinking Aus wine this Xmas. Standing with my Aussie cousins. 🇦🇺🇬🇧

Who cares, the Chinese better get used to life without Australian exports and imports. They shit in their own nest, seems to be a communist thing. 🤣🤣

nothing grows in China, dig a few feet anywhere and you'll discover mass graves.

No it’s not. But Chile, California, South Africa, France are big enough.

The answer is no. However wine has never been the mainstream alcohol consumed in China, and there are wines from other countries can replace Australian wines, namely Chilean, French, Americans. Any wine with foreign language label are sold as a luxury item in China.

BLM! Alcohol from the ethnically White European community since arriving here as boat people 250 years ago has devastated my people. We have lost everything. China is better off without alcohol!

Chinese citizens will buy foreign wine over Chinese every time.

Did anyone ever see this guy again? I bet there’s no Grange for him at Xi’s table.

I'm certainly not going to buy Chinese wine!
