Meet the 11 top executives key to helping General Motors CEO Mary Barra usher in an electric future

Bill Pugliano / StringerMary Barra took over as General Motors' CEO in 2014. Since then, the first woman to run a major automaker has dealt with challenge after challenge, from a massive ignition switch recall and a United Auto Workers strike to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But accomplishing — and fighting off — all of that can't be done by a CEO alone. Barra has always helmed one of the best management teams not just in the auto industry, but in the entire business world. Then in late 2019, as the United Auto Workers undertook a new contract with the Detroit Big Three, the embattled union decided to strike GM, sending almost 50,000 workers to the picket lines for more than a month — the longestOne might have thought that GM would get a breather, but in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the factory to idle all Chinese — and then all US and European — production.

The New Zealander held several critical jobs at GM, including CFO and president, before becoming CEO of Cruise in 2019. The self-driving startup is based in San Francisco and was acquired by GM in 2016. For several years, cofounder Kyle Vogt remained as CEO, but when Ammann moved west from Detroit, Vogt became CTO.

Since its 2009 bankruptcy, GM has rebuilt its financial-services arm, and Berce, who joined GM in 2010, now oversees a reliable generator of about $1.5 billion in yearly profits. Blissett's job is to maintain that legacy of success while negotiating a shift from internal-combustion engines to electric powertrains. And with a $27 billion electric strategy behind him, the executive isn't likely to run short of products.

After running GM's Canada business, he was named head of Cadillac in 2018, just as the luxury nameplate had been christened as GM's lead electric brand. In 2020, he took over as chief of the entire North American operation, putting him in charge of the world's most competitive market and, thanks to the popularity of SUVs and pickup trucks, a key profit driver for the automaker overall.

Johnson started at GM in 1980, working at a plant in Ohio. Forty years later, he supervises the car-making giant's entire global manufacturing footprint and attends to labor relations for GM's 50,000 UAW-represented workers in the US. These technologies are now converging as GM combines EVs, autonomy, manufacturing, and computing power to deliver an anticipated 30 new electric cars, trucks, and SUVs by 2025.
