Text messaging is taking off as a way for influencers, media companies, and brands to reach fans directly — and make money

Fans who texted the number were politely asked to fill out a form to share their name, gender, age, and location.

As most fans quickly discovered, they hadn't reached Easterling on her personal cell. Easterling uses, a text-marketing startup backed by Ashton Kutcher that enables celebrities, influencers, and more recently businesses and media brands like ViacomCBS to send texts directly to fans and customers.
