However, for many businesses speeding up a return to in-person operations is critical.Property investment firm Charter Hall, which has hundreds of head office staff and manages 1,100 properties across the country, had about 75 per cent of its own office staff back onsite regularly before the most recent coronavirus restrictions hit.

Many of the offers for onsite staff are focused on that socialising, including Tuesday breakfasts, Friday nibbles and team building events like paper plane competitions. Staff at the Australian arm of coworking space WeWork are able to split their time between the company’s headquarters and its 21 Australian sites. General manager Balder Tol said the company was expanding staff services in the office to put a greater focus on social connection.

However, businesses must accept that the office was now focused on networking and collaboration and incentives to get staff back must focus on these elements rather than an individual’s role or day job. While COVID-19 restrictions temporarily shuttered many coworking spaces last year, Mr Krauskopf said competition was now heating up for high-class amentities.
