A growing number of companies big and small are now dropping requirements that made it harder to hire, from minimum education levels to experience. CVS no longer requires a high school degree and Amazon has stopped testing job seekers for marijuana.

, even as many companies complained they couldn’t find all the workers they need. Employers added a hefty 940,000 jobs in both June and July, lowering the unemployment rate to 5.4%.

Job-hunting platform ZipRecruiter, which scrubs 16 million job postings of all types of work, says the percentage of jobs requiring a bachelor’s degree fell from nearly 15% in 2016 to just over 11% in 2020. But that figure dropped even more drastically to 7% from January to June of this year. For the percentage of job listings requiring no experience, the figure went from roughly 9.2% in 2016 to 14.3% in 2020, and jumped again to 18.6% for the first six months of this year.

“Traditional hiring processes are highly subjective and can have multiple barriers that complicate access to economic opportunities for any potential talent,” Black said. “Still, this disproportionally impacts people of color. Without being able to easily and credibly assess skills, implicit bias can shape the recruiting and hiring processes.”

Karen Rosa, 32, started out as a server at the Lost Dog Cafe last September but then became a bartender without any experience. She says she can now pull in a steady $600 to $700 a week. She says her server’s income was more volatile. But there are downsides, too. White says she’s been so desperate at times she’s had to hire some servers who have bad attitudes and have actually scared away customers.

“Not just anyone can step into these roles,” he said. “These are skilled jobs, and they should be compensated accordingly.”

Shame that you needed a high school diploma to work at CVS, but you don't to be a member of Congress

Need a better wage ($25 per hour) and transportation services so we don’t have to walk and housing provided by company and rent and utility bills must be paid and housing must be at least 3 rooms and 3 bathroom, enough for a whole family. I’m insane, I know.

Weed should never stop someone from being employed. Now pay a decent wage.

How do you not finish high school tho lol

Like CVS is not already a nightmare of gross incompetence?!?

That explains the french fries in my increasingly late Amazon parcels

Lmao

If they could they’d outsource those jobs to foreigners. They will do everything but pay a livable wage

Companies should raise the Minimum-wage, loosen [unrealistic] job requirements such as experience that many people don’t have, and provide a positive workplace environment for everyone! Not just the few but for everyone!!!
