KUALA LUMPUR: A greener and more sustainable shipping industry is the way forward for the maritime sector in its post-pandemic revival, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The Transport Minister said that players in the maritime industry must work together in deploying new technology and promoting greener shipping practices to achieve this goal.

He added that the theme chosen by the International Maritime Organization for World Maritime Day 2022 -"New technologies for greener shipping" - is an opportunity to reflect on the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector for the future. "This opportunity brings us all to focus on the importance of a sustainable maritime sector, and the need to build back better and greener in a post-pandemic world," said Dr Wee in his keynote address at the launch of Malaysia Maritime Week 2022 on Tuesday .

"Hence, the Malaysian maritime communities are called on to actively support a greener transition of the shipping sector into a sustainable future, and showcase maritime innovation, research and development, and demonstration and deployment of new technologies," he added. Dr Wee said that while Covid-19 has battered the shipping industry in all forms, a commitment to safety must be reaffirmed through effective collaboration, regulation, enforcement and safety promotion.
