Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine on February 22 in the full knowledge that the money to fund his war will come from selling coal, oil and gas to European countries. Europe's dependence on burning Putin’s fossil fuels to heat our homes, generate our electricity, and power our cars is the fundamental context for understanding this war.
