However, the South African Constitution considers anyone under the age of 18 to be a child. According to experts, farms employ up to 70% of South Africa’s child labourers. A recent study by the Department of Labour says about 60% of children found working, do so in order to help their parents financially and that constitutes unlawful child labour.
Agri-Wescape CEO, Dannie Strydom, is urging farmers to keep within the confines of the law. “As an organisation we are not aware of any incidents regarding child labour. The western cape farms are regularly visited by the department of labour to do audits, and from the western cape side we urge our members to stay within the confines of the law.”
Maybe they should pay attention to child pregnancy first
