UK lawmakers are worried. Here's why 🎓⬇️

Chinese students are now by far the biggest overseas market for UK universities, with the number of applicants up almost 60 per cent in three years to a record 31,400, according to the university admissions service Ucas. The increase in demand from China comes as the number of applicants from the European Union, which was the biggest source of overseas demand before last year, fell 54 per cent to 23,160 between 2019 and 2022.

However, Nicolas Chu, chief executive of Sinorbis, a company that helps UK universities with their marketing in China, said Chinese applications to UK universities will continue to rapidly increase, citing the perception of the UK as a safe destination with a visa application process that is easier than comparative countries.

Poorer students are also set to go to university in record numbers, with the application rate for 18-year-olds from the poorest areas of the UK reaching 28.8 per cent by the end of June, up from 27 per cent in 2021.
