Milton Spracklin Sr., Ernest’s son, was just one year old when the business was founded. Growing up, he worked alongside his father, learning the trade. He joined the workforce full-time at the age of 14, and in 1972, he took over the business, which had then relocated to the Pleasantville neighborhood, on the banks of the Quidi Vidi Lake.

“I was brought into the business as a young child basically. This is all I’ve ever known – working at United Sail Works,” he says.Under Milton Spracklin Sr.’s stewardship, United Sail Works provided canopies for visiting figures like Pope John Paul II and Queen Elizabeth II and contributed equipment for films such as Orca, Cries from the Deep and Ghost of the Abyss. However, Milton Jr. has made further investments in equipment in recent years through the purchase of high-tech air-powered machines and vinyl welders.These days, the business has four employees apart from Milton Jr., and extra staff is brought in for larger jobs. Arlene Spracklin, Milton Jr.'s wife, is the company's controller.
