Plogging Nigeria Club, a environmental and climate group, has organised a clean-up exercise at Olugbede market, Egbeda area of Lagos state. The exercise started with picking up of wastes in and around the Olugbede market and ended with the sensitisation of market men and women on proper management of waste.

Officials of Lagos state ministry of environment and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency participated in the clean-up exercise.Speaking on the essence of the clean-up exercise, Rukayat Ajibade, coordinator of Plogging Nigeria Club Ipaja area, said the exercise was organised to clean up the market and discourage people from dumping waste, indiscriminately.

“The essence of this clean-up exercise is that we are volunteers who care about the environment. We also believe that we — the citizens — have our part to play,” she said. “We can’t just be relying on the government to do everything for us. We believe that we should sensitise the market men and women on how to handle their waste properly.“We also discouraged them from dropping their waste indiscriminately into drainages. Those wastes will block water drainages and it will lead to flooding which is at the detriment of everyone and the environment.”
