Of the more than 6 million people that have fled Ukraine since Russia’s invasion, 100,000 of them have found free, temporary shelter through Airbnb. Some 48,000 Airbnb hosts in 160 countries have offered stays to people fleeing Ukraine.

Of the more than 6 million people that have fled Ukraine since Russia’s invasion, 100,000 of them have found free, temporary shelter through Airbnb, the company said Wednesday.

An estimated 6.3 million people have crossed the border out of Ukraine since Russia’s incursion into the country, according to UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency. Airbnb has helped house refugees in Germany, Poland and other countries. About 1,100 Ukrainian refugees have found shelter through Airbnb in the U.S., an Airbnb spokesperson said.

In reality, Airbnb’s refugee housing program is a joint effort between the company, its nonprofit arm — Airbnb.org — and dozens of other nonprofit partners including refugee settlement agencies such as HIAS. Airbnb’s offer of free, temporary housing for refugees relies on Airbnb hosts to open their homes to refugees, nonprofit partners that register refugees and book the Airbnb stays for them, and members of the public who donate money to help pay for the refugees’ stays.

Airbnb hosts who volunteer to offer their accommodations for free for refugees aren’t charged Airbnb’s usual 3% service fee, but they aren’t compensated beyond that.
