As rents skyrocket and landlords demand extensive paperwork for applications, people on ODSP struggle to compete.

In less than two months, she submitted six rental applications across the GTA after being evicted from the one-bedroom basement unit in Etobicoke she’d called home for five years. She says the landlord claimed he needed the basement as storage for his girlfriend’s belongings.

As rents skyrocket and with landlords requiring multiple financial and personal documents to entertain a bid, it’s increasingly more difficult for ODSP recipients to findin the hypercompetitive rental market, as many can’t offer letters of employment or credit scores. In addition, landlords ignore them when social assistance is brought up, say housing advocates, who call it a form of discriminatory behaviour that’s difficult to prove.

Tompkins is struggling to find anything for less than $1,500, but says such accommodation is typically “a dive.” ACTO has not collected data on the number of discriminatory complaints people on ODSP have lodged during this red-hot rental market, but anecdotally, the centre has seen a significant increase in calls for those on social assistance struggling to rent since the Canada Emergency Response Benefit ended in 2020.

“It’s ridiculous what they’re asking for these days,” she said. “This is none of their business. I have evidence of a guaranteed monthly cheque, guarantors, and strong landlord recommendations.”
