Lumas plants its first West Coast flag and third U.S. gallery — and 22nd globally.

A global contemporary art gallery seeking to bridge the gap between upper-crust auctions and open-art marketplaces is opening a West Coast flagship this month in Union Square.

Exhibits will draw from Lumas' more than 250 new and established artists and collection of more than 3,000 works. The space will exhibit between 60 and 80 works at any one time, the majority of them of international origins. Roughly 40% of the works are either from artists statewide or locally"themed" — for instance, depicting scenes out of California history.

Lumas sells limited-edition reproductions rather than originals to keep a more accessible price point, or"global pricing" that Wild said is particularly competitive in high-cost San Francisco. Works on the Lumasrange from $349 to more than $7,000, and Wild said they historically can range from $150 to upward of $20,000.

The global gallery's founder and CEO Marc Ullrich opened the first location in Berlin in 2004 and entered the U.S. market via New York two years later. Since then Lumas has branched out across Europe with more than a dozen locations in Germany and others in Budapest, London, Paris, Vienna and Zurich. San Francisco will be the fourth presence in North America following New York, Miami Beach and Toronto.
