Thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of the year as more than 10,000 people will file through the airport each day over the holiday, leading to long lines and parking closures.
Jax Paws, a volunteer-based program that includes a team of 12 humans and 13 dogs, will try to make flying through Jacksonville a pleasurable experience. The dogs are owned, and sometimes trained, by volunteers who work in two-hour shifts at the airport. The dogs go through extensive training and testing before they’re able to work at the airport and must be registered as therapy dogs, which is at the cost of the owner of the individual pup.
“We just offer time, relaxation for those who may be stressed or anxious, even a little distraction time for little kids.”
