There are scarcely any Indigenous directors on the boards of Canada’s big companies. That needs to change

The near total absence of Indigenous people on boards is an especially pressing problem. Think of the Crown’s legal duty to consult and accommodate Indigenous groups, work carried out in large part by companies as projects are proposed for development. Picture a resource company aiming to build a major product that needs local Indigenous backing. A lack of Indigenous voices on a board hurts a company. Insular companies are weaker than they need to be.

Diversity isn’t just marketing fodder. Research consistently indicates corporate diversity has a tangible impact. The consultancy that Canada could add a cumulative $150-billion to the country’s economy over a decade – a GDP boost of 0.6 per cent annually – if there were gender equality in the workplace, starting at the top.

Why does this need to change? Are there Indigenous business men who are qualified to do these jobs? If yes, then they would be on the boards now wouldn't they! Since 2015, Trudeau and mainstream media have bee pushing the racism agenda very hard...

They just don’t show up. Ask any jury duty that is required.

SO WHO IS GOING TO MAKE THE CHANGE ?

QUALIFIED ppl get qualified jobs. Period, u dont get SPECIAL fkkn treatment jus cuz ur fkkn skin color. Cut the dam b.s. You ppl hav gotten enuff free shit n put too dam high ur pedastals as it is

Buy some share and see what happens

Whether there is or there is not is completely irrelevant. Board positions should be based on competency and merit, not race.

The problem is most aren't interested or qualified.

Equal opportunity is a must. Equal outcome suggests lowering standards and overlooking those who are more qualified. Why would anyone invest in a company that hires lower qualified employees?

Curious. How many MBAs, CPAs, MPAs, LLBs were awarded to First Nations people in Canada last year? Tuition is usually free for First Nations, right? How big is the supply of qualified people?

I'm sick of people hiring based on credentials and stuff.

Indigenous on a companies board of directors not required.

Why?

What nonsense. Competency should be only criteria. Race should not be relevant. Your racism is nauseating

GlobeDebate Boards are appointed by shareholders, it’s no place for social equity activism-sorry progressives

'Problems of inadequate diversity matter because boards of directors with a variety of voices and experience make for stronger companies.' Is there any evidence this is true? Wouldn't having the most qualified be better?

Race- baiting. Nice.

How about hiring the most qualified person regardless of race or gender FFS

Why would that need to change? Why is racist?

I never understood when people complain about there not being enough/too much of one particular sex or ethnicity in a particular role. It’s called free markets. People do what they want.

No. No, it doesn’t.

Imagine thinking you deserve a job just because of the color of your skin or ethnic background.

When they have the qualifications and want to be on them, that will change

These people are tyrants
