Competition Bureau Canada could appeal the Tribunal’s decision to the Federal Court of Appeal. Critics are calling on government to do more.

The Competition Tribunal’s decision to allow the merger of Rogers Communications Inc. and Shaw Communications Inc. was “rushed” and “disappointing,” say critics, as many look to the federal government to create stronger competition rules.from Competition Bureau Canada, a competition watchdog, seeking to block Rogers’ proposed $26-billion purchase of Shaw.

“We remain concerned with the impacts the merger will have on Canadians, particularly in Western Canada,” he said. Matt Hatfield, campaigns director of OpenMedia, said the decision was “the last nail in the coffin of telecom affordability in a dismal 2022.”In the last year, Distributel and Ebox were bought by Bell, and VMedia was bought by Quebecor, indicating that emerging telecom companies don’t have a chance to compete, he said.

Critics say the federal government must step in to ensure there is fair competition within the industry and protect consumer interests.
