Cisco Systems is letting go of about 6% of its Bay Area workforce as part of the restructuring it announced in November.

Cisco Systems Inc. is laying off 583 people from locations in San Jose and Milpitas, the IT and networking company informed California's Employment Development Department on Wednesday.

According to the letters, Cisco said it was shedding 371 employees from its headquarter's campus at 170 West Tasman Drive. The layoffs cover a range of positions, many falling into business-focused roles in marketing, project management, strategy and planning, and business development. Most of the job losses, though come from the ranks of software engineers.At the company's Milpitas campus, at 560 McCarthy Blvd.
