The company's co-founder and CEO says the move comes as demand for Twelve's technology, which converts carbon dioxide into clean energy, is growing.

Twelve co-founder and CEO Nicholas Flanders said in an emailed statement Monday the Alameda facility would represent an expansion of the startup’s Bay Area footprint; the company already leases space at 614 Bancroft Way in West Berkeley, though Twelve did not immediately respond to questions about the facility's size or its employee count there.

The expansion, Flanders wrote, comes as Twelve is growing to meet “customer and partner demand” for its technology, which transforms carbon dioxide into clean energy to be used for manufacturing applications. The company, has partnerships with Mercedes-Benz, Procter & Gamble, Shopify, NASA and the U.S. Air Force.

Twelve’s lease at 1135 Atlantic was in the months before life science leasing in the Bay Area began to slow: Economic headwinds have pushed many fast growing life science users like Twelve to make do with their existing facilities instead of spending capital on new leases and required tenant improvements.

Building permits filed with the city of Alameda show Twelve has so far spent more than $850,000 on improvements to 1135 Atlantic since the spring of last year. The company did not immediately respond to questions Monday about when it would seek to have the facility up and running.
