San Antonio business generates buzz with non-alcoholic, hemp-infused spirits

Brian Conaway, who is the founder of a new company called Powered by Plants, makes a non-alcoholic brand of rum, gin and tequila that is infused with the resin of whole hemp plants. The company also produces carbonated pop drinks with hemp as well.Using hemp grown in California, San Antonio entrepreneur Brian Conaway has developed a business model that allows his customers to experience a good buzz, but without the effects of alcohol. And he does it well.

Conaway, with his Powered by Plants business, makes a line of tequila, rum and gin that uses the hemp that is versatile enough to make an assortment of boozy-like concoctions. But he doesn't drink alcohol and has been in the health and wellness business for more than 20 years. The basis for his spirits is in the resin, which is a cannabis concentrate from fresh flowers.

"There are more than 5,000 brands of alcoholic beverages, but there are very few that go as far I do with hemp," Conaway said. For example, a standard margarita requires about an ounce or so of tequila. When using the hemp tequila, half that amount will suffice. There are little to no calories and Conaway said his products are a huge hit with the female audience. He started this endeavor about six years ago, and his products are now available in San Antonio, Austin and Dallas.Powered by Plants features a non-alcoholic brand of rum, gin and tequila that is infused with the resin of whole hemp plants.
