Rossendale Borough Council secured £300,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and added a further £200,000 of council money to invest in the market off blackburn-road>Blackburn Road. Mixed reactions from the public were shared on social media with some residents praising the initiative while others commented that the funds being spent on the market would be a waste.
“We have had to play home games in areas in Greater Manchester like Salford and also in Burnley and it’s a lot of travelling. Most 3G pitches are £75 an hour and then there is the cost to get there. He continued: “I just think spending money on the market is a waste because the market won’t get used and it’ll end up closing. At the moment there is only a food outlet and a fish stall in the market that’s currently open and there is no car park so there is no reason to go.”
Paula says the area would look more attractive if this was done and she believes there is not a need for four petrol stations in the area. “It would help to have a green space there. If it’s thriving with good food people want space where they can sit and relax.” “It would be good if restaurants set up pop up stalls at the market to sell their fresh food and they would do really well because there is a demand for it.”
