Beautifully written debut novel from the Hollywood icon conjures up a cast of fully drawn characters as we’re taken through the movie-making process from very early inspiration to a screening of the final product

Like pretty much everyone else on the planet with a lick of sense, I’m a fan of Tom Hanks. He’s a great actor. If you don’t agree, just watch his brilliant performance in Road to Perdition for which he should have won an Oscar.

He has a James Stewart everyman charm that’s beyond the more Apollonian Pitts and Clooneys. We trust him because we feel that, somehow, he’s one of us. Hanks knows his way around a typewriter too, preferably one of those vintage models he collects. He’s a credited screenwriter on the brilliant Band of Brothers series that he produced with his pal Steven Spielberg, while his 2017 short story collection Uncommon Type won deserved praise.
