💷 Managing money is a challenge for everyone but being neurodiverse can make it harder Personal finance specialist Annabelle Williams, who has ADHD, gives her top tips for coping ⬇️

Each of these can happen to anyone on occasion, although with some it might be impossible from a neurotypical perspective to understand how someone could “let that happen”. But none of these happen because neurodivergent people are inherently lazy, disorganised or incompetent – it’s because their brain is wired to process information, perceive time and focus differently from the majority.

Resolve to spend 10-20 minutes one day this week on a single problem area. Give yourself a specific task – rather than “I must sort out my pension”, break it down into two steps: looking for pension paperwork at home, then reading it to make sense of it. Leave the next steps for a session in a few days’ time.Neurodivergent brains often struggle with competing priorities.

You may be locked into contracts for essentials such as insurance, utilities, mobile phone, broadband and mortgage repayments. Pick one, check when its due for renewal, note it down in your diary and if the contract ends in the next month , check comparison sites now to see if you could move onto a better rate.Automate bill payments as much as possible by setting up standing orders and direct debits so bills are paid without you having to remember when they’re due or deal with the admin.
