Creators say it takes 5 months on average to earn their first dollar and 18 months to fully support themselves, according to a new survey

A new study surveyed 1,440 creators about the time and costs that go into building their businesses.Here are four other takeaways for creators.

The Tilt, a newsletter for professional content creators, surveyed 1,440 creators during the months of February and March as part of its third annual. It was conducted in partnership with creator companies Total Annarchy, Creator Science, Future Freedom, and Lulu. The 18-month timeframe showing milestones from when a creator earns their first dollar to when they have enough money to hire help.The Tilt's founder Joe Pulizzi told Insider the 18-month timeframe is consistent with each year the study has taken place.

The timeline was based on the creators who said they spent most or all of their time working on their content businesses. Respondents in the overall study were broken down into part-time or"side gig" creators and full-time or"all in" creators, and most were looking to turn their content into a business of some sort. The average creator had 4,000 followers across channels, showing most creators have small audiences.
