South Africa could curb illegal artisanal mining by regulating the industry, an industry expert said.

Families and residents of Angelo Informal Settlement in Boksburg are still in shock after a fatal gas leak claimed the lives of at least 17 people on Wednesday. It's suspected the leak is linked to illegal mining in the area. The Gauteng legislature is calling for law enforcement agencies to develop specialised units that will help eliminate illegal mining in the province. Action Aid's Sifiso Dladla spoke to eNCA.

This follows the deaths of 17 people in the Angelo Informal Settlement in Boksburg this week due to a gas leak."We need Parliament to be able to formulate a piece of legislation," he said.
