Ideas and funding to change a Rossendale market, as part of wider town centre improvements, have been welcomed by councillors. at the latest full council meeting.
A larger sum for other Haslingden public space improvements was originally wanted through a Heritage Lottery bid. But rising costs mean circumstances have changed. Now work is inderway to look at options for this. Councillors agreed to allow the borough’s director of economic development and lead councillor for the economy to accept additional external funding to support the Haslingden programme, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Councillors also supported the latest Haslingden Market ideas. Next steps will be obtaining planning permission, a contractor and closing the market for six to eight weeks.
Conservative Coun Laura-Beth Thompson said her political group welcomed the latest ideas and added: “We also want to thank Sara Britcliffe MP for her help. We look forward to seeing the work start. There is some disappointment about the public realm ideas but we hope that can be looked at again.” Labour’s Samara Barnes said work had started but circumstances had changed since the pandemic. She said: “This isn’t about paperwork or project management. It’s about the costs of living. Everything has gone up.”
