A rental listing for a studio apartment in Richmond in which a tiny kitchen was located inside a garage - for the hefty asking price of $450 a week - had many suggesting on social media that the Australian rental property market was broken.

If you were a petrolhead who liked carbon monoxide fumes with your coffee in the morning it could be the dream home.

The extraordinary listing, which was pulled from the Domain website on Thursday, prompted federal Greens member for Melbourne Adam Bandt to write to Consumer Affairs Victoria. Yarra City councillor Stephen Jolly said enforcement officers from the council had visited the property at 4pm on Thursday and told the owner the studio was not compliant as a rental property.

Cr Jolly said the outcry on social media reflected that the community was sick of low-quality micro-apartments.
