A number of international consumer goods companies, including Diageo, Unilever, Coca Cola and Nestle have initiated an Africa Plastic Recycling Alliance.
The multinational companies, operating across Africa recently launched the plastic project at the CEO Africa Forum held in Kigali, Rwanda. The alliance which is aimed at turning the current challenge of plastic waste in sub-Saharan Africa into opportunity of creating jobs and commercial activity seeks to improve the collection and recycling of the plastics for companies to be able to facilitate and support their local subsidiaries, engage with the investment community and policy makers, encourage innovation and collaborate on technical solutions, as well as participate in local pilot initiatives.
“We see an opportunity to tackle that problem in a way that creates jobs and reduces dependency on imported materials while alternatives to plastics are developed. “Collaboration within and across markets will be key to success so we are proud to launch the Africa Plastics Recycling Alliance to increase those efforts and play our part as companies in finding solutions that work for Africa.”
