The famous North Geelong hotel with a grand – and fake – sphinx could be yours, but it will cost you a pharaoh bit.

It’s been a tourist magnet for years, with visitors writing captions like “Look, Mum, I’m in Egypt!” for the selfies they take at the Sphinx Hotel.

Ray Ramia, who died in 2016 aged 90, came to Australia from Lebanon in 1947. He worked in factories in Geelong before opening a tailoring business. He later ran a menswear shop in Little Malop Street in Geelong’s CBD.In 1971, Ramia and his business partner, Tom Dunn, bought a paddock in Thompson Road, North Geelong, and built the Golf View Hotel beside a golf course.

“He was a very hard worker. He built this place with his own hands,” she said. “As he got older, you’d see him walking around picking up glasses and talking to the customers; he was always involved. He was always here, from morning to night. This was his life.”Poker machines were installed in the hotel in 1991, and later the name was changed to the Sphinx.
