'Can we just get this whole thing done': The seven-year saga to revamp Melbourne's Queen Victoria market

The tortured, seven year process of trying to reach agreement on a facelift for the much loved but fading Queen Victoria Market reminds trader Marshall Waters of Brexit.

“I make note there are four large supermarkets under construction within a 20 minute stroll of the market,” Mr Liacos said. “No change for the QVM is not an option.” The original plan to build an underground car park and delivery and storage areas for the traders underneath the heritage-listed fruit and vegetable sheds has been nixed.“Instead of that we have a solution that struggles to meet the long term needs of the market and has a remote car park.”

Fishmonger Costa Lambropoulos believes there needs to be more than 1000 car parks at the Queen Victoria Market.Heritage Victoria last year rejected the underground parking lot, saying it could not be assured the market’s heritage sheds could be returned to the site in their original condition.
