While Roche continued his education in vineyard management, Smith secured her winemaking certificate from Penn State Berks. Q, How close has the experience of owning a winery been to what you expected? Most enjoyable part? Most difficult? A, While our property sits on 5 acres, we have 2 acres under vine here at Serpent Ridge and we care for another 2-acre vineyard in Hampstead, Maryland. We are growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese and Chardonel here and Chambourcin and Cabernet Sauvignon in Hampstead. We are currently sourcing all other fruit locally from Carroll County, Frederick County and Washington County with relationships we’ve developed during the past several years.

Q, Have you changed much there since you bought the place and, in your mind, what makes it a unique destination that you strive to preserve?
