These days, Rupert’s most influential titles are chairman of Swiss-based luxury goods company Richemont and South Africa-based diversified investment holdings company Remgro.
While Rupert was born into a business empire his father Anton built, he also carved his own way with self-honed skills and experience, and made key decisions that significantly grew his family’s fortune.Rupert was born on 1 June 1950 and grew up in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape. That would set him on a course to co-found the cigarette company Rembrandt Group with an initial investment of £10. The rand had yet to be invented at that time, and the British pound was South Africa’s official currency.
The company was merged with Rand Consolidated Investments, after which Ruper left to join the Rembrandt Group, his father’s company.
