Part of a heap leach facility at the Eagle Gold Mine failed, sending contaminated gold tailings into some local waterways

News reports from Mayo, Yukon said there were elevated levels of cyanide in local waterways after a tailings failure at the heap leach pad at the Eagle Gold Mine owned by Victoria Gold Corp .

The Eagle Gold Mine produces doré from a conventional open pit operation with a three-stage crushing plant, in-valley heap leach and carbon-in-leach adsorption-desorption gold recovery plant, said the company website. Cyanide is added to the process to help leach gold from the ore. “Environmental Health Services and the Chief Medical Officer of Health are monitoring the situation. Based on the information currently available and based on the location of the incident, the drinking water supply wells for the Village of Mayo are not impacted and the drinking water in Mayo is safe to drink," he said.
