Lebeya says over R16 million was recovered in the first quarter from ill-gotten gains in cases that the Hawks are investigating. Lebeya says a total of 77 court orders for Preservation, Forteiture and Confiscation were granted in the same quarter. He addressed the media earlier on Sunday on the progress and milestones made in the 1st quarter of 2024/2025 financial year.
Lebeya says the responsibility to recover the funds stolen in different sectors does not only rely on the Hawks but also on the priority specialized investigations and the NPA. “We haven’t dealt with the recovery. The amount that we talk about when it comes to the recovery is in the field of priority crimes, specialized investigations that we work closely with the asset forfeiture unit of the NPA. So, it’s not necessarily the responsibility of the Hawks on its own to recover because that is a civil part; so, we deal with criminal part,” says Lebeya.
