Manchester may have its famously vast Christmas Markets back with even more stalls spread across the city for 2024. But it's got plenty of competition with seemingly every big city now offering its own festive wooden hut extravaganza.
Chester was only pipped to the post in the study by Bath, but it "scored higher for its ease of getting around, parking and lack of crowds". Chester being a particularly historic city means you also have a patchwork of black and white buildings either side, and it sits opposite the grand Chester Cathedral. The market is nestled at the end of one of the main shopping streets, so you can easily combine it with a full day out, walking the historic Rows and cobbled streets of the city.
For the majority of stalls I'd say were gifts here, with only a handful of hot food and drink stalls. There's also a focus on local artisan traders, so you can pick up some really quirky gifts here. Indeed, I feel like the Sausage Council of Great Britain must have united this year and decided that all bangers in buns served outdoors will be at a set price of £8. Because wherever I've been so far this year, whether it be garden centre, Christmas Markets, light trails, they all seem to be pricing sausages at £8.
The youngest son wanted chocolate-dipped strawberries which he absolutely loved. These cost £7 at Chester, while you can get the same thing in Manchester for £6.50. There's apparently a Santa's Grotto here but we couldn't find it. Mind you, by the end of our visit the rain was literally drenching us so we were scurrying about just trying to find somewhere to stay dry.
