The Malaysian shopping mall industry is urging the authorities to reconsider the decision to increase the base electricity tariff, slated to take effect in July 2025. They argue that a potential 15% increase in TNB tariffs will place a considerable financial burden on both operators and consumers, driving inflation and impacting household spending power. The industry highlights the already significant operational challenges they face post-pandemic, including a surge in ICPT (Imbalance Cost Pass-Through) tariff, which has increased from US$0.02/kWh to US$0.16/kWh, representing approximately 50% of their total energy bill. They appeal for a more equitable pricing structure to avoid further burdening the industry and consumers.
