And other lies we’ve been told... A few years ago, I attended a conference for women in tech.

One of the title sponsors was asked to come up to the stage to say a few words to the attendees about her business. She just had a baby and walked onstage with her sleeping newborn strapped to her chest. She gave her speech while gently swaying and patting that sweet baby’s bottom.Just as quickly though, I heard a murmur from someone sitting behind me “Why would she bring her baby here? Couldn’t she find a sitter?” Ugh. My heart sank. Maybe she couldn’t find a sitter. Maybe she wasn’t married.

As if running a business weren’t hard enough, we have to field the guilt trips that our male counterparts don’t. "There were several occasions where comments were made by people at my daughter's preschool that implied that I should somehow have more time/flexibility because I run my own business, such as, 'Well, MOST moms who work from home will be there .' My husband never reported hearing anyone suggest that he take off of work or make special arrangements to attend these same activities.
