The Philippine government has reminded a US Senate panel to mind its own business after deploring its move to bar the entry of local officials involved in the detention of Senator Leila de Lima into their territory.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said the US Senate panel’s action was a “brazen attempt” to intrude in the country’s legal processes as well as an “outright disrespect” to the public clamor law and order.

He argued that the US lawmakers’ travel ban seeks “to place pressure upon our independent institutions thereby effectively interfering with our nation’s sovereignty.” A US Senate panel earlier reportedly approved an amendment to a bill that would prohibit the entry of any Philippine official involved in De Lima’s supposed wrongful imprisonment. US Senator Dick Durbin has reportedly welcomed the panel’s decision in relation to the alleged politically motivated detention of De Lima.

Instead, he said the Palace would respect their democratic processes whether these are in the form of a congressional measure or an immigration policy. “We shall leave it to the international community to ascertain which nation values the rule of law in accordance with the principle of state sovereignty,” he said.
