Comment: While leaky old pipes lose 110 million litres a day, the NSW government will slug households rather than invest its huge dividend from Sydney Water, writes Justin Field

You could almost hear the collective gasp from households at the news that Sydney Water had asked the state’s pricing regulator to increase water bills by 2.5 per cent so it can increase spending to respond to the drought.

Something has clearly gone wrong with water planning in Sydney. The government has been chasing its tail with this drought. We knew in the middle of last year that inflows into Sydney’s dams were at record lows, just 40 per cent of the previous record low set in the 1940s. But doing anything before an anticipated close election was off the table.Things haven’t improved since and the delayed action is biting.

“Our cash flows need protection against the risk of significantly reduced water demand,” the submission reads, so the tribunal “should determine prices to ensure it strikes the right balance between affordability for our customers and our financial resilience".
