Amazon has continued to march toward smart home device dominance, despite increased regulatory scrutiny:

a "Ring Smart Lightbulb" filing to the FCC, an indication that the company may be looking to further expand its smart home lineup.For Ring — whose products include video doorbells, security systems, security cameras, and smart lighting products — this would represent the company's foray into standalone smart lights .

By potentially moving into the smart lighting space, Amazon would further challenge smart home partners by encroaching on valuable market share. Amazon the $100-million-dollar Alexa Fund in 2015 to groom third-party smart home device makers for the Alexa smart home platform. This was emblematic of its strategy in the early days of the smart home industry, when ecosystem providers — most notably Amazon and Google — courted third-party developers to create extensive product lineups.

While Alexa still interfaces with devices from numerous third-party partners, the company has gradually extended its own product lineup, often pitting the company directly against those partners. Beyond the expanding Ring lineup, Amazon also introduced connected , ovens, and plugs. As smaller smart home players are reliant on Amazon's and Google's ecosystems, they have little recourse when the tech giants threaten their market share by introducing in-house alternatives.
