Millions are seeing little return from their expensive college degrees, and recent grads are more likely to be out of work than the population as a whole.

Millions of Americans are seeing little return from their expensive college degrees — even in today’s hot jobs market.than the population as a whole, according to the New York Federal Reserve. And for the lower-earning half of college grads, the wage premium is shrinking fast.

It’s another worrying sign for a generation that borrowed record amounts of money to get through higher education, as the cost of tuition soared. America’s $1.6 trillion in student debt, which has doubled in the last decade, is weighing on the economy and spurring politicians to offer fixes as diverse as targeted aid and across-the-board forgiveness. The strong job market should be helping graduates to pay what they owe — and at the top end of the wage scale, it is.

The economy is creating a lot of jobs like that — and it’s expected to create even more. In the occupations that are forecast to grow fastest over the next decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics — home care and restaurant cooks, among them — typical salaries range from $24,000 to $26,500.

But the slow start for newly minted graduates may reflect broad job market strength, not weakness, said Steve Bronars, an economist with Edgeworth Economics. Eager new graduates are still enjoying one of the best labor markets in years.

Because there’s no GPA in the real world

Glut

Because when you graduate, you are fooled into thinkin you’ll make 70k+ without experience and then you have an Epiphany it doesnt fit the reality of the job market and what companies tend to offer.

Nobody wants to hire people with useless degrees like underwater knitting degree

Job market is hot? Definitely there are 12.50$ per hours jobs everywhere not exactly to become financially independent. 100k student loans to fry burgers.

Because graduates were promised a starting salary of $65,000+ out of college, but they have a dance major and can’t understand why a corporate firm won’t hire them.

0 work experience

Because the 'hot' economy only has crap jobs with low pay, no bennies and a degree makes you overqualified.

Basket weaving is not a real marketable degree.

Because a degree in gender equality doesn’t apply to most jobs?

Maybe because a lot of studies are nonsense like gender studies nobody has a need for. Also, many students party too much instead of intern with their extra time.

The job market isn't as hot as the Media and Trump reports! I remember when I was in HR opening 5-10 employee requisition per dept to give the illusion our company was hiring and growing when in reality, most of the staff we hired were temps. UBICaucus

Because college grads need more than a McJob to pay off their exorbitant loans?

Because ' Do you want fries with that ' only goes so far.

Because there in bed until 10:00am. Thats why or maybe drunk or doing pot.

Dont need a degree to work in warehouse.

Asinine majors. Spoiled brats.

Maybe you can find a way to blame Obama for this dilemma too?

Lack of skills businesses need?

I think that the education system is completely failing students by not helping to place them into jobs prior to graduation. Internships should be mandatory for all students. My generation (and we all went to college) got handed a degree and 'good luck.' And that's it.

Because they live in California who gives all the jobs to illegal immigrants who break the law by being here

Because all entry level jobs these days require two years of experience and pay less than $40k a year.

The economic indicators you are relying on have been decoupled from actual increases in prosperity. The numbers keep going up, but Americans are in ever more precarious and miserable conditions. Capitalism is failing for most people while a few make billions

No one wants to hire people gender theory degrees
