Millennials, more than any other generation, believe that they can make a difference in the world. They want to connect with causes directly. And, they consider activism to be the most effective way to bring about change

John, a 30 something MIT graduate, left his"dream job" with a well-known and very successful high tech firm last year because they weren't doing enough about climate change. And he is not alone. Pressures are building, and leaders would be wise to pay attention. Just ask Jeff Bezos.

By now, anyone who has read the news knows that Bezos made headlines last week when he announced the creation of The Bezos Earth Fund—to fight climate change. And how do his employees, many of whom are Millennials, feel about it? The response was hard to miss. released a statement applauding him for his philanthropy but stated:"one hand cannot give what the other is taking away." They claimed that his move shows employee activism works.

The employees’ statement also referred to company threats to those who spoke out previously about Amazon’s relationships with oil and gas. Rather than intimidating these employees, the company’s actions provided them with additional grievances to air in public.Growing numbers of companies face employee demands for stronger action against climate change and other social and political issues.

Organizations, both large and small, for-profit and nonprofits, could experience either public or private push-back from an employee population that believes activism is the way to make a change.Millennials, more than any other generation, believe that they can make a difference in the world. I do not necessarily believe that millennials are any different than past generations that believed they could change the world. The greatest generation, the technological boom and other times over the past 100 years have certainly seen an ambitious and successful halcyon too!
