Senator Grace Poe said government regulators should just allow competition between motorcycle-hailing service providers instead of imposing a cap on the number of units that can be allowed to ply the road.

“If ever the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board comes up with a number generally for all, and then it’s up to them to apply. Pabilisan na lang sila, pagalingan ,” Poe, chair of the Senate committee on public services, said when asked about the Department of Transportation’s rider cap policy in an interview with ANC Wednesday.

“That created a controversy because clearly Angkas is already a pioneer in the market. And then you have JoyRide and Move It. In fact, JoyRide and Move It couldn’t even fill their quotas,” the senator said. “Because remember, these drivers are self-employed, almost. They’re under Angkas, JoyRide, or Move It, but it’s their own time, their decision, it’s app-based. They can choose which company to join, which one will provide a better benefit for them,” she said.

The TWG currently set the rider limit at 63,000 — 15,000 for each of the three motorcycle-hailing companies in Metro Manila, and 3,000 each in Metro Cebu and Cagayan de Oro.
