The rate of cord-cutting in the US is likely to accelerate in the months ahead due to the impacts of coronavirus on live sports programming and household discretionary spend.Cord-cutting has already been accelerating in recent years — but generally because of the growing availability of free or cheaper streaming alternatives and the rising cost of a pay-TV subscription. The US saw a 6.4% decline in pay-TV households in 2019, versus a 4.3% decrease in 2018, and 3.

1. The loss of live sports programming on traditional TV networks. Over the past two weeks, virtually every major sports league broadcast on US TV networks has either suspended, postponed, or canceled its season due to coronavirus concerns — a that has expanded to include the NCAA's March Madness tournament, the NBA, the MLB, NHL, MLS, the PGA Tour and the 2020 Masters, NASCAR and IndyCar, and the UK's Premier League.
