State governments are working on extraordinary interventions to protect up to eight million Australians in rented homes, as the property sector warns of a 'disastrous' outcome if rental payments come to a halt

Landlords will be blocked from evicting tenants in a rental rescue package aimed at protecting people who struggle to pay their rent during the coronavirus crisis.

Landlords will be blocked from evicting tenants under a plan being worked on by the state and federal governments.A separate plan is underway to help small business owners stay afloat when they cannot pay the rent because their stores and services have been closed down by government edict to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The measures would prevent landlords evicting tenants from both residential and commercial leases if those tenants can point to the coronavirus crisis as the cause of their financial stress. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said he did not want to see tenants evicted but he understood the challenges for landlords who had to repay mortgages.

Why state and not federal government?

Disastrous? But landlord negative gearing losses will skyrocket isn’t that what they voted for in May?

You can't punish investors either. It would mean the collapse of real estate, the economy would need that like a bullet to the head!

'Disastrous'.... yeah not for the greater population

Landlords can get mortgage relief from banks but are not hanging down the same to tenants. Why’s that?!

Fasten this up!

Landlords have lived high on the hog for years. Time for the sort of pain their tenants feel every single day.

Time to play 'tenant roulette', whether you like it or not.

actually you are taking away our private property rights - lets face it

What the government driven realestate market now has to be put on life support with huge government intervention, who would have thought this would have come to being.......?

All because FOURTEEN people are in Victoria’s hospitals.. 14.

Not sure why news outlets continue to sound shocked about finances stopping. Everything that can be must stop/be put on hold until this is over. Human lives are worth more than money any day. Ffs where is that brick wall when I need to bash my head against...!

How do you pay rent? No Eviction means very little.

Any landlord that evicts tenants in these circumstances is a complete scumbag.

Public housing has a 20 years+ waiting list with under 200 made available by the Andrew's labor government last year. The private sector does not invest in new rentals, the shit will hit the fan like never before.

8 million ! Why foreigners can by and 8 million aussies cannot that’s about 30% - really. Something wrong with this picture .

Paywall

Someone needs to press the “pause” button for the *entire* economy.
